Wow, that was lots of help. Guess I'll wait until spring, until then I'll get some gear.

Does anyone know the required specifications for helmets? I don't want to spend too much for a helmet. Maybe below $100.

What gear? You need nothing but a car that will pass tech to come do a HPDE:

It's like much autocross tech... street cars are fine. Although convertibles need rollbars.

Most groups require M2000/SA2000 or newer & better. I'd recommend closed face with a visor, from a known manufacturer. Make sure it has the brown (M) or orange (SA) Snell sticker on the inside, because that's what the tech inspectors look for. For good cheap SA2005 rated helmets it's hard to beat http://www.gforce.com/products/helmets.php . Or for the cheapest thing you can find, M2000 open face from http://www.helmetcity.com or similar. Also keep in mind NASA has loaner helmets for registered HPDE students. And autocrossers.
