Need help with a coolant leak......'96 Accord LX 2.2
Working on this for a friend.......just trying to keep it going as long as possible. Its a non-VTEC 2.2 liter.....and the coolant leak sometimes doesn't show its face.
Quick brief: sometimes this thing idles crazy.....up to like 2000rpms sometimes. Not something I'm too concerned about right now......I want to fix her coolant leak. Sometimes it will start to overheat a little bit when shes driving, even down the road at speed. The fans work, and the coolant seems to be pretty clean.
The leak: I looked the other day and couldn't find a damn drop of coolant under her car. I woke up this morning and looked out in the street, there was a small puddle underneath the car. I popped the hood, and could see a somewhat steady drip......coming from the backside of the engine, close to the timing cover. I pulled it in my garage and onto some ramps, and confirmed the leak is coming from that area. There is part of the block that sticks out right there, so I can't see above it. I took my fingers and ran above where I couldn't see, and all I felt was sludge from the timing cover leaking....it didn't feel wet like coolant. The best I could tell, that portion of the block that sticks out.....it almost feels like there is a screw or a freeze plug in it. I'm hoping its the block drain or a weep hole for a failing water pump.
Anyone?

Been searching, looks like that is going to be the problem. I know I have a LX 2.2 non-vtec.......but how close is this DIY to what I have?

Sounds like the dihydromonoxide flow motivator to me.
There is a drain for the weep hole that comes out right where you describe.
I would do belt, balance belt, and all seals while you are at it.
And install one of the balance shaft seal retainers.

Pretty much identical. New water pump, both the timing and balance shaft belt, balance shaft seal, crank seal, cam seal, and yer done.
