how do i hook up my volts meter

i got a volts meter in my car and it has a white which is power for the light, black which is ground, and 2 big red wires that got o my alternator, one is a primary wire and the other isnt. i have 4 wires going on my altenator. where does my to wires hook up to. or can i take a meter and try to fid the wire or wires that have volts going through them? im just wondering if i have to use both or just one wire.

You should be able to tap off of many different places. I'm assuming that one of those red wires is a constant +12V hookup to monitor the battery and the other is a switched +12V that hooks up to your ignition? You don't have to tap off of your alternator, it would be much easier to read off of one of the wires coming from your battery instead, the voltage will read the same..
