DMV question.. Drive Away Tag for buisness?
Hey all! I want to find out how can I get a drive away tag for a mechanic shop or car sales business? Like a tag that would allow me to test drive a car that does not have tags or something like that? Anyone have any experience with that?
You can get a dealers license. They dont cost that much but there is a test involved. check the DMV web site. an dthey have the infomation and study guide at dmv.
Thats what I was told, they gave me the study guide, said i need to take the test and apply for aproval from richmond. Well they did leave out a lot. I gues they thought I was looking to be a salesperson. But I do know people with dealer tags without dealerships.

I have seen someone with a "drive away" tag before. I want to know if maybe this was a old system that they have done away with or if they still have this.
The tag had "Drive Away" written on the top where the "Dealer" would be on the dealer tag.

I havent seen any other information about it than this. Do I HAVE to be a dealer to have this? Or can a business use this to pick up cars for repair?

If you are engaged in the business of delivering unladen motor vehicles under their own power from points of assembly or distribution, before beginning delivery of any of these vehicles, you may apply to DMV for a registration card and license plates (drive-away license plates) before beginning delivery. Also, if your business performs any of the functions listed below you may apply for drive-away license plates.
Please note that it is unlawful for any person to use these license plates other than:
On unladen motor vehicles, trailers, and semitrailers which are being delivered from points of assembly or distribution in the usual course of a person's delivery business.
Operators of the above vehicles being delivered that display these plates must at all times during their operation have in their possession a proper bill of lading in their possession. The bill of lading must show the point of origin and destination of the vehicle being delivered and a description of the vehicle
By a financial institution (not licensed as a motor vehicle dealer) in the normal course of business in taking, repossessing or otherwise transporting vehicles for the purpose of preservation, sale, allowing a prospective buyer to test drive the vehicle if accompanied by an employee of the financial institution or has a written permission of the financial institution or a form provided by DMV (form DSD 27B), or otherwise in connection with repossession or foreclosure of the vehicle on which there is a security interest securing a loan to a financial institution.
A business engaged in the mounting, installing, servicing or repairing of equipment on or in a vehicle may use these plates. The use of these plates are limited to the pick-up and delivery of a vehicle and can not be used on vehicles that are used for general transportation.
