I had a 3.0 with no problems.

But because of the iron block and aluminum head design these motors tend to blow head gaskets due to the different heat exchange from the two different types of metal.

The only problems I had motor wise in the 3yrs of owning it were starter, fan pulley, ecu burning out.

Motor ran strong just SLOWWWWWWWWWWWW. I personally don't like the motors or the 4cyl motors.

V8 or something different is the only way to go.

22r's are the best offroad 4banger i've seen. and you can find 'em everywhere plus beef 'em up. the earlier v6 are s*$t! As far as gearing goes. i've seen ppl drive with the stock gears and 35's but it's a slow ass ride. alot of ppl are too lazy or cheap to bump the gear ratio up! If i ever could find an '85 4x4 no matr if it's xcab or regular in decent shape i'd jump on it so fast. I'd have the best of both worlds then...E.F.I. and solid front axle!

Yeah. I never had any problems with my 3 ho. It was a little slow, but I would never trade it for a 22 anything. I would def look into the 5vz though.

throw a 7mgte motor in it. Youll be good after that. And if you decide to go that route i have everything you need to do the swap minus the bell housing needed to mate to a W56. I run the 22re on mine with 5:29 gears. BUT DO NOT GO ANY HIGHER RATIO. After that the pinions become worthless. I run 36's on mine and my buggy ran 39.5" with the same set i have on my truck. As long as your geared youll be fine. But then again a 22re isnt all that great for a mud truck. For the rocks they are awesome. Just put a 350 or some ford motor in it. Thats all you need for something that light in a mud truck

Now if you're talking about a MUD truck you should find some type of dependable v6 or like they said b4 a 350 or sbf. I thought about running a 4.3 in my Nissan but i'll hold off now. Also i've seen a few ppl running izusu v6's. I'm guessing they're a good powersource.

I've never seen an isuzu motor in a toyota. The 4.3 is a good swap but the sbc takes some persuasion to get it to fit... you'll be banging on your firewall a good bit for it to clear. The sbf fits nice and snug if you can overlook the fact that it's a ford motor.
