I found this article from the Post interesting:

There's no regular schedule for the street races. But whenever a driver calls one, news spreads quickly through the tightknit racing community, centered in Charles and southern Prince George's counties.

On an isolated highway on the chosen night, fans gather, sometimes hundreds of them. The two drivers exchange "smack talk" and decide what defines a win, said a source who works with many participants but doesn't want his name connected to the illegal pastime.

The street races provide a thrill, bragging rights, and occasionally the chance to win thousands of dollars, according to those familiar with the pastime. They also frighten neighbors -- but police say they find it difficult to stamp out competitions with shifting locations known only to a secretive group of people.

After the deaths of eight people during a race yesterday morning on Indian Head Highway in Prince George's County, residents of the area said they have complained repeatedly to police about the threat to safety.

A Prince George's law enforcement source, who asked not to be named because the investigation is ongoing, said police are aware of a circuit of street racing aficionados. But he said stopping the races is not simple because the races move around, and those involved keep the information within a tight circle.

"It's a continual cat-and-mouse game," the source said. "It takes a lot of additional resources to go after them."

Racing clubs monitor for police cars to protect their racers. "It's pretty sophisticated. They have lookouts, and they know we're coming for miles."

What a coincidence you all rep the same kind of car. You guys single handedly give DSM drivers everywhere a bad name.
You're a fucking idiot. Re-read my post a couple more times and get back to me when you have some reading comprehension skills packed under that mullet. Street racing is an entirely different sport from track racing. Street racing is a wager with another car, and the race is one car against another car. Simply opening a track, or allowing more access to a track is not an answer. "go to the track" is not an answer, because the track does not have any events that allow for street racing type racing. If there were events for this style of racing then there'd be a real excuse not to race on the street. The closest thing there is at the tracks to real car vs car competition are events like NOPI, etc, and the rules are so extensive and picky that 90% of your average streetracer's cars either can't fit in a class to race or are forced into a class in which they are uncompetitive. People that can't afford to spend $5000 per season on re-ding their setup to follow the latest rules on turbo and suspension restrictions that often change not only once per season but multiple times DURING the season are left with no other choice if they want to race competitively. I am not talking about safety rules. Safety rules are there for a good reason, which is understandable. Too many people thing going to the track is a simple solution. It's not. I enjoy the track a lot too, but the issues is that it is a totally different sport! racing against a clock is NOT the same!

Also i'd like to note something that gets on my nerves and a lot of other DSM guys a lot too. The track can often be MORE dangerous than the street for some of us, as we don't do burnouts, and 99% of the time the water box guy is too fucking stupid to listen. I've had problems every single time i've been to the track with the waterbox guy trying to spray water for a burnout, even chasing me and spraying water in front of me when i try to drive AROUND the water. Last time I was at richmond dragway I had to drive through the grass because the idiot just followed me when i tried to avoid the water. I had to get out and yell at him to stop, then he did hte same thing to me on my next pass. My car has a lot more power now than it did then and honestly I'm afraid if they do the same thing to me when i go back i could end up in wall due to their stupidity.

This is not "whining", this is pointing out the flaws in the system which lead to this "problem"

yeah, because none of us have built fast cars built for the street

Last I heard you don't have much grounds for that comment.

also I'm not too sure if many of you other than the NoVA guys are familiar with PG county but they have bigger things to worry about and aren't exactly made up of a well regarded police force. i can quickly think of 4 locations where this racing occurs regularly in PG alone.

Are you the same Toxinz from the "other" Va racing site?

If so, I'm seriously laughing at your ignorance.

i "put all the stuff in my car" mainly because i enjoy working on my car, and enjoy driving it. to me, a more powerful car and a car tweaked to my preference is more fun to drive than a plain old car in stock form. i personally take it to the track for a real race, and only then i do it mainly for the purpose of comparrison to see the results of my work more than anything else.

the reason i commented here in the first place is to point out that you all are attacking the wrong people. the cars you see wrecked on the news, next time you see it, pay attention to what kind of cars they are. you will find that the cars wrecked on the news are 99% of the time, a stock 4 door sedan of some type.. corrolla, accord, altima, etc.. stock and unmodified.. and it sually happens on a turn or something like that... these are the dangerous people.. they do not know how to control themsekvelves in a car. most of us who modify are cars (and yes i say MOST for a reason, not all) love are cars and don't do anything stupid like that. we know how to drive our cars and know the limitations, and that is why you won't see a wrecked 400 horsepower DSM or a slvia conversion 240sx, or a turbo motorswapped honda, or a 67 camaro with a supercharged v8 wrecked on the news.

the people you see wrecked on the news due to "street racing" are people who take mommy's gocery getter out on the highway and floor it for 5 miles next to hteir friend whoss done the same. this is not racing, it is asking for death.

Sounds to me that you agree with my statement

To those complaining about "omg street racing is illegal":

NO SHIT SHERLOCK. It is an activity that has always taken place and will always take place. There is nothing you are going to do to change the fact that it's going to happen somewhere at sometime. Racers know the risks and decide to do it anyways. Spectators know people have died at races and they go anyways. Police can do there best to throw racers in jail, but there is an endless number of people willing to do it anyway. I'm sorry you can't press a button and make it stop. All you can do is do your best to stay away from it. People are going to do what they want to do when they want to do it. It's always been that way. Move on, end of story.

This is a terrible situation but it happend and it's over. There is no one to blame but the victims themselves for attending an illegal race where saftey was not a factor. They made a choice to be there in the middle of the fucking road and got hit by some moron driving down the road with no lights on.

Everything I said is pure fact, and that's just how it is.

I was merely saying that people build these street cars that intend of driving them on the street have a real hard time actually taking them to the drag strip to run them because of all the safety rules put in place. Most of the street racing i have seen is in the middle of nowhere and is somewhat organized. That said i believe most of the time the racer isn't the one who causes the accident. Their will always be exceptions because lets face it shit happens and being stupid is being stupid. I see more young teens who drive mommy's car around like it a formula 1 race car and 9 out of 10 times cause an accident.
