I don't think they allow kids under 18 at Langley speedway without a comp. license. However, I am pretty sure that you can sign a waiver at VMP or Richmond Dragway and he can drag race there.

My father allowed me to start autocrossing when I 15 and had my learners permit and this was in his Corvette. I think it is an exellent idea to take new drivers out to an autocross as it allows them to learn car control in a safe environment. I plan to do the same for my kids. Keep an eye on the section for when the local autocrosses are announced.

Wow, great helpful posts from the enthusiast crowd. Not everyone aspires to be little douchebags when they are kids.

Along the same lines of getfast's post, autocrossing is a great place to get started learning the limits of your car without having to deal with walls and other distractions.

www.autocross.us: check the events section of the forum for all upcoming local autox events.

Definitely check out the races at little creek amphib base (ACU-4) and a lot of guys get their feet wet at Pungo airstrip. I still have yet to make it out to NASA's days at the big tracks... looking forward to them though.

+1 for the local autoX scene. There are several drivers under 18 out there at every event. I have the same issue with my 16 yr old, I had him signed up to drive an event, and he was stoked, that was until he got his first ticket. It's a good thing to hold over thier head, cause once they start it's addictive. It's the best place to learn real car control and there will be many people willing to ride along and coach him if he wants. I'd much rather my son hit a cone than a tree.

is your son in norfolk? if you want i could keep an eye out for him, pull him over, and scare him a little bit into driving responsibly. i've done this for other parents too and it seems to get the message across. just pm me with the last three numbers of his plate.

Deffiatley get him involved in autocross. My brother started autocrossing when I was like 13 and I went with him to every event to watch and ride along if I could. Once I got my permit I was doing every event I could either in our friend micheals(vbspec) car or my brothers. A couple months before I got my license I started racing my auto civic, it was slow as balls, but still a ton of fun. And I think I began to put down some reasonable times. Fastforward 3 years, I now do high performace driving events at real race tracks about 5 times a year. And in feb I plan to become a high performance driving instructor.
