DSM OWNERS PLEASE HELP: CAR BURNING OIL
OK heres the story. I have a 98 Eclipse RS and whenever i drive far for like more than 30 minutes it starts hesitating and leaves a cloud of grayish blackish smoke. The accelaration also decreases real bad. I checked the plugs and they didnt seem like they had oil on them. They had some kinda white deposits on them but thats about it. The compression read 183-178-183-183. So the compression seems fine what could be causing it to do this? Thanks for you help in advance.
it to me sounds like ur rings could b just starting to go bad and not letting any oil through yet but the white build up on the plugs is carbon and actually that might just be u have to mutch carbon build up on ur plug for it to spark. ur compression rate shows it is only in one cylynder im guessing number 2. just some things to think about!!!!!
i thought if the rings where bad that the compression would be low. I think thats right aroung what it should put out. Im not in town so im going to change the plugs when i get back and see whats up. If anybody else has any imput let me know. Also the car isnt turbo.

If you are leaning out so bad as to cause white spots on the plugs and hesitation, you are going to cause serious damage to the engine soon! So be careful.
Start with fuel filter and plugs. Quick, easy, and cheap, and should be replaced as a maintenance thing anyway. Sounds like it has been running lean for a while (possibly clogged fuel filter), and that would mean higher exhaust temps, and debris being burned from the converter (black smoke). Compression numbers look fairly good (stock turbo numbers are usually around 160, and I think the N/A is only abount a point higher).
